Basics on Punches

Punches are used extensively in mechanical processes in order to punch holes in sheet metal and to locate centres for drawing circles, to create small holes for drilling introduction, to remove damaged rivets, bolts or pins and to transfer location of holes in patterns.

Types of Punches

Prick Punch - It is useful for placing reference marks on metal. You can use this to transfer dimensions from a paper pattern directly on to the metal.

Center Punch - This is useful when making large indentations in metal, required as a precursor for initiating drilling processes. Usually, a center punch is heavier than a prick punch and has a point ground to an angle of 60º.
