Mild Steel
Carbon steel is at times termed as ‘plain carbon steel’ or ‘mild steel’. Mild steel is now the most common form of steel, since its price is comparatively low and has material properties that are suitable for various applications. The carbon content in a mild steel is about 0.05 – 0.25%, making it more malleable and ductile than steel. The tensile strength of mild steel is relatively low. Carburizing can be used for increasing surface hardness.
Mechanical Properties of Mild Steel
Maximum Stress 400 – 560 N/mm2
Yield Stress 300 – 440 N/mm2
Young’s Modulus 210 GPa
Elongation 10 – 14%
Reason of Selection
-
Easy availablility.
-
Cost effective.
-
High tensile strength.
Piston
The pistons are one of the most important parts of an engine, because they are the mechanisms that contains the engines energy. The pistons are located in the cylinder block.
Pistons come in many different materials and sizes that are based on the cylinder bore of the particular motor they are being installed in. A piston is a cylindrical engine component that slides back and forth in the cylinder bore by forces produced during the combustion process. The piston acts as a movable end of the combustion chamber. Pistons are commonly made of a cast aluminum alloy for excellent and lightweight thermal conductivity. Thermal conductivity is the ability of a material to conduct and transfer heat. Aluminum expands when heated, and proper clearance must be provided to maintain free piston movement in the cylinder bore.
Reason of Selection
-
Strong enough to crush the can.
-
Rotational motion is changed to linear motion.
Car Wiper Motor
An electric motor is an electrical machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. The reverse of this would be the conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy and is done by an electric generator.
In normal motoring mode, most electric motors operate through the interaction between an electric motor's magnetic field and winding currents to generate force within the motor. In certain applications, such as in the transportation industry with traction motors, electric motors can operate in both motoring and generating or braking modes to also produce electrical energy from mechanical energy.
